Endocrinology and Metabolism
Introduction of the Department
The Department of Endocrinology and Metabolism deals with diseases caused by various hormones, secreted by the body, and changes in metabolites caused by reactions with such hormones. Our body’s endocrine system can self-control the excess and deficiency of hormones. This function is known as ‘feedback’. With this function, a human body can replenish any hormone in deficiency and suppress any hormone in excess. If this function fails, it can cause various negative effects on several organs, especially thyroid, pituitary gland, adrenal gland, and gonorrhea. These diseases are usually treated by the Internal Medicine of Endocrinology. On the other hand, metabolic abnormalities such as carbohydrate, protein, fat, calcium, and others are treated by the Internal Medicine of Metabolism. These two fields are combined in the Department of Endocrinology and Metabolism. The Department of Endocrinology and Metabolism offers treatments against endocrinopathy such as thyroid disease, pituitary disease, adrenal disease, and gonadal disease as well as metabolic diseases such as diabetes, obesity, dyslipidemia, osteoporosis, and parathyroid disease.
